 Dear Madam,

I regret very much that owing to the many calls on my time and due to the arduous conditions under which we are now serving that I have been unable to write to you before to express my very deepest sympathy with you for the loss of your son Percy Almond, and to tell you that he died gallantly performing his duty onboard this ship on 17th Oct.

The "Dragon"was hit by 3 shells fired from a battery onshore whilst taking part in operations against the German Forces attacking Riga, and one of these shells bursting amongst the crew of a 6" gun to which your son belonged, killing 8 of them instantaneously, him among them and wounding 4 others.

He was buried at sea next day with his comrades in the Gulf of Riga.

I cannot tell you how much we all deplore the loss of such a gallant seaman and good shipmate ,or how much we feel for you.I know that it is hard to offer any consolation.I can only say that your son lived and died up to the best traditions of the great service to which we belong,no man can do more.

believe me

yours sincerely

FA Marten

Captain R.N.
